How Can You Determine That The Flow in a River is Subcritical, Critical or Supercritical Without Taking Any Measurement

Generally, Froude number (Fr) is used to determine the water flow state(Subcritical, Critical, or Supercritical). But without using this Froude number (Fr), it is possible to calculate the water flow state.

You have to create a disturbance on the upstream side and observe the wave of water flow. If the wave of water flow propagates on both upstream and downstream sides simultaneously, it can be called Subcritical flow.

Similarly, You have to create a disturbance on the downstream side and observe the wave of water flow. If the wave of water flow propagates on the downstream side only, it can be called Supercritical flow. It happens because there is a high speed of water flow on the downstream side.
