Advantages, Disadvantages and Uses of Broad Crested Weir

Advantages:

1. The head loss across the structure is usually small.

2. You can install Broad crested weir in channels with flat slopes without affecting the upstream flow depth.

3. Easy checking of the measurement precision.

4. A theoretical calibration based on post-construction dimensions can be obtained and the accuracy of the calibration is such that the discharge error is less than 2%.

Disadvantages:

1. For water supplies with sediment, there will be deposition on the upstream side.

2. There exists a dead water zone at the upstream side of the weir and the head loss is more comparable to other devices.

3. Difficult to prefabricate.

Uses:

1. It is usually used for measuring the discharge of flow in irrigation channels.

2. Flowing accuracy can be calculated.
